In the garden and some more...

...so I’ve been stripping off grass by hand, hauling sacks after sacks of soil and gravel and bark... I’ve been planting and replanting, been scratched, bruised, sunburned and stung by wasps, but my heart is over beaming with joy... my job in the garden is done, at least for now it is... and maybe I can now sit and relax, and just enjoy the garden...

Ah, but can I ever just sit, relax and do nothing? Are you like me? Are you that type of a girl who would never stop working considering what she's doing is her passion?—something that drives you in the morning and afternoon, and even at night time? Time passes by so very fast when I’m working in the garden. I don’t consider it a chore; not at all… here there is no such thing as Monday blues and you rush to work like a kid going to an arcade... it's like a dream, the earth spins around you… are we ever able to feel the Earth spin? Can birds and other garden creature feel it spin too?

The new flowerbed I’ve been working on for the last few weeks have delightfully changed the view of what it was the least appealing side of my garden. We’ve even made our own little pond with rocks collected from the riverbed... all I need now is a garden mouse and a hedgehog and one or two dragonflies and a frog, and some newts too! ;) I’m so happy! I am now surrounded by a walled garden; secluded—green swathing the eye; and the sweetest, most delightful-looking place I could think of.

How still the morning is; and how lovely the garden! As I sit here I’m listening at the stillness. What is it saying? Can you hear the stillness talking to you too? The birds around me have bowed quiet too... they’re as still as all the rest of the garden. They aren’t even fluttering their wings; they’re sitting atop tree branches without stirring, looking at the garden; looking down at me in wonder.

I want to be here eternally; sitting here in the garden doing just this, thinking about these things, with this same warmth and same blue skies above me all year around. Not a thing to be changed; not even time... it is so precious—this very moments here in the summer garden.

Can I live here and forget my chores inside my little cottage?
Oh there are few things I must take care of in there... shall I then go work inside?
I’m thinking maybe I should go make me some tea out of the herbs growing in the hedges along the garden and see if that will make me get some magical powers so that I can command my broom to do all that work for me! You know, Bibbitty Bobbity Boo kinda stuff! Who would want to work inside on days like these? Certainly not me! Now that I just remembered, I should go check in Arabella’s box for that magical potion! Ah yes yes yes yes... that’s what I should do! You see, a while ago while in Hollow Woods a witch gave me some magical potion—a flask with potion so potent it can transform you into a bird, or a frog or even worse things if you’re not careful enough or forget to say the right words. But I’m sure this will do the trick, and I’ll have my broom do all the work for me in a zilch! Don’t worry, I now exactly what to do: First off, I’d shake the flask; then I will remove the lid from the flask. Turn the flask upside down over a slow fire and gently shake the flask so the potion would come out... as I do this, I would chant: “Rain, rain, come our way... fill the sky, soothe the land!” Ups!! Oh my oh my.... that’s not it, is it!! That’s the spell to bring rain!! And what are those words to make my broom do the work? Oh dear dear me, can you hear it? Ah yes, in the distance... the rumble of thunder as the storms weaves it's weary path! Best be off now lest I want to get socked! And who knows, I might be turning into a disgusting frog right this very moment! Do tell me... can you see me from where you are? Do I look anything like a frog to you? Gulp! ;)

What are you doing in your garden lately? Working too much too? Relaxing? Figuring out the language of birds? Do share your stories!

RANDOMNESS

I so want these lovely fairy shoes... But at $225 bones I won’t be getting them any time soon. So I asked the fairies to find me some fairy shoes I could afford... and they did! Oh yes, they did! In fact, they found not one, but two lovely pair of fairy shoes for me... each at $3.99—never used or hardly used; which is perfectly fine with me! I absolutely love them!
Sequins studded pink fairy shoes!
I love the iridescent shades on these ones...
We slept on the guest room on the second floor last night—it’s something we like to do from time to time just for fun—to gravitate from the old routine. Do you do that too sometimes? Try it if you haven’t! It’s so much fun! When I sleep in our upstairs room I like to imagine we're at another place; maybe on vacation in another country in a little Inn or a romantic Bed and Breakfast somewhere... sometimes, when morning comes, I can’t remember where I am, or where I slept. In the boundaries between sleeping and waking up, I would turn around to look at the garden from my downstairs’ window and find myself looking at the clouds instead... pretty fun!
Can we be little girls again for just a day and play together? Which of these cute little girls would be you?
I often dream of a whole new wardrobe. Throw away everything that no longer fit my life and unleash my spirit with clothing that agree so entirely with my personality that even birds would know where my heart lives...
I feel so comfortable wearing long flowy skirts and gauzy blouses, and if it were for me I would wear ruffled bloomers too! Oh oh and petticoats that would peek below the hem of crinoline skirts, and ruffled dresses worn over multiple undergarment, and hoop skirts and bustles and parasols and silk gloves and muffs and bonnets, and even a long cape made of peacock and pheasant feathers... How do you see them apples! ;) I love mornings... the early the better in my opinion. I especially love those warm lovely mornings when I go straight to the garden after I wake up to find the earth clad in blossoms. The sun is slowly descending upon the somnolent garden bringing with it new hope and the possibility of new beginnings... the faintest scent of roses softly carried by gentle breezes; it whispers: “good morning”! And there I am—captivated by it all... so this here is where I'm spending a lot of my time these days... Our back porch... sun-filled afternoons curl up with a book, and at dusk enjoying a cup of tea as we watch the sun go down…
I’d like to share with you a very curious incident that happened to me this morning. What I’m about to share could sound somewhat supercilious, but I hope you don’t see it that way... I’m truthful in the smallest detail.

I had stopped for coffee before heading off to work at a favorite coffee house in downtown and was sitting by the window truly immersed in my surrounding—the sweet aroma of the coffee wafting in the air, the hush voices of people talking in the back, the early morning mist, which made the sun shiver in pink tones above the city; the birds in the bird-feeders outside the coffee shop... then, all of a sudden from outside came this very interesting couple. I could tell by their look that they have been on the streets for a while. The man had terrible matted coils of hair-like dreadlocks, and had some type of chains on his arms and legs. I couldn’t tell precisely what nationality he was—perhaps he came from the Sadhus people? Or the NagaSadhu in the Pashupatinath temple in Nepal?
The minute this man saw me, something real unusual happened... he looked straight at me; surprise in his yellowish eyes; then quickly approached me... I immediately thought the obvious; he was going to ask for money, but I was mistaken. Looking straight into my eyes the man said: “You have magic all around you” (Maybe he seemed my dreamy unfocused look, and thought I was seeing a world to which the others were blind? ) ;)

I was truly astounded by this, and didn’t know how to respond to this... then, in a most natural manner, he asked: “where do you get your magic from?”

Well, at that point I just had to smile... if I truly was to have but a speck of magic in me, I should known the source... So I pointed up and simply said: “from above”. Perplexity in his eyes—you could tell he wasn’t expecting to hear that one ;) “Really”?—he said still looking into my eyes. Then, he extended a hand and said: "Hi... my name is Crow."

I could see people all around me watching; waiting to see how I was going to respond to that gesture; to a dubious hand, to that intimidating name… I’d lie to you if I told you I wasn’t somewhat startled; afraid almost... appalled by darkness; and thus, I didn’t know exactly how to respond. But then again, I felt surrounded by this incredible peace inside me... “My peace I leave with you; my peace I give you”... peace in my heart... God’s peace in each step...

“Nice meeting you—I said and shook the hand.... the magic was then passed on...

To light the world with kindness and acceptance—here rests true magic...

Ps: When I later shared this incident with one of my co-workers, I was shocked to hear what she had to say: “Is the full moon people”.... total intrigued by her remark, I asked what she’s meant... she said that the weirdest of people always comes out at the time of the full moon, which by the way it happens to be this Saturday. Creepy!

May you be blessed and thank YOU for your company and for the light and joy you bring into my life...

Under the Tuscan sun...

August—it’s hot and dry, but I would never avoid the garden; not even on the hottest day of the year would I ignore it. Our summers around here are but fleeting moments. To allow myself to put away my gardening tools would be sacrilege. So I’ve been working incessantly; stopping only to hydrate and maybe eat a morsel of mouthwatering fruits in season...

You see, I've been working in the creation on a new flowerbed that runs north to south along the fence in the west side of our house, and knowing that the gardening finish line is nearing made me do crazy things... like working extra long hours under the August sun.

I must admit that as much as I love summer, working under extreme heat can really do some bizarre things to your brain, not to speak of your body... the good part of it is you’d discover you have magical powers... you would see things that are not, hear things that are not and even talk to things or people that are not... in fact, just yesterday around 3:00pm I thought I saw you wandering my garden in your pretty summer sandals. Was it you? Was it me? I must have been under the spell of the sun... or was it more in the brink of a heat stroke?

The love of growing things is universal, and each season in the garden prompts different action, and brings its own urgency, and thus, I plunged into creating new planting spaces. I’ve been envisioning this for a long time—planning things in my mind, deciding what I would plant, what needed to be moved, and the wait could not be prolonged. Besides, the frost is coming soon—I know it. There aren’t many days left in the gardening year... can you not see changes brewing up in the horizon? Oh I can. Sadly, I must say. What I see in the garden is very precious because it has so short a time to live.

I am very satisfied with what I’ve done thus far in this part of the yard. The old swing is looking marvelous sitting in its new place, and I have embellished it with some old outdoor cushions I’ve been saving, and added a solar lantern to hold the black unknown at bay.

I have a special fondness for dishes; particularly vintage rose designed dishes and delight in embellishing my garden with the most unusual things—things you would normally find in a kitchen you'd see scattered all around my garden... like this gorgeous vintage bowl...

Isn’t this the most gorgeous bowl ever? Why would anyone give it away? Many a days ago this pretty bowl rested on someone’s table, but given the chance of a second life it sits pretty on my new flowerbed, posing as a birth bath now... I just love it!

I’ve been stung by wasps, a few more wrinkles have been added onto my scarred hands and skin, but at least I can sit down now and relax... at least for now I can. The garden looks glorious in its peak. Vines and tall garden phlox and the summer Peeper that find their home amidst the black-eyed Susan all cohabit peacefully in this paradise that I just so love...

It is so nice to just sit here and do nothing... just look at the world pass by me in heaps of delightful wonderments.

May your day be filled with joy. May you never give up, and keep on trying. And may your heart be cured by the joy of a flowering garden…
