Welcome, September

I’m sure there must be some mysterious connection between the arrival of September and cooler weather… it must be! Have you noticed anything unusual in your part of the world? Here, in our valley, the arrival of September was acknowledged by temperature falling from the triple digits to a sudden 71 degrees… just like that, from one day to the other. It amazes me—this hasty change, and makes me think that September really marks the arrival of fall…

Ah yes, can you hear it too? Autumn’s mellow voice speaks softly… yet, it’s so clear. Autumn creeps with concealed force; it sneaks into your garden without you even noticing it… it spreads and swirls ripening to an overall gold as it heals a world that has grown dusty and dry under the austerity of August.

Before we know it, every petal from the roses, every flower will be just but memoirs from the past dancing in the folds of our memory… I don’t know what it is, but the arrival of fall, for lovely as it may be, it always puts a touch of sadness in me… as if something very dear was drawing to a close. It’s a death, really. The rampant energy of spring and summer has passed… like a man walking towards his inevitable end.

I’m I already passing the end of summer blues to you? Oh I hope not! And don’t you mind me… you see, I’m just too much of a melancholy soul, but I’m volatile too, so that means that although today I may be feeling blue, tomorrow you’ll see me dancing in wind-blown leaves as happy as I can be... so watch me laugh, jumping across puddles of leaves! For now, I think I will go through my scarves and think of apples and cider, and pumpkins and nuts on the ground and crimsoned leaves and the smell of them burning... that should help, right?

Welcome, September!

  1. Fall is my favorite time of the year. Our temps went down just a few days ago, but Summer does not want to let go so this weekend we are headed back up to the 90s. Love your garden pictures.

  3. Autumn is also my favourite time of the year as I just love the colours! and over here we don't have any wind in autumn so you can still enjoy the outdoor minus the wind of summer which can be very unpleasant! Your roses are looking amazing still!

  4. In this part of the world, we are just into the second day of spring, and the temp.. went from cool- cold 15-19deg celcius to a beautiful 27 overnight. I love spring and autumn, one is as refreshing as the other. So enjoy your lovely autumn (fall) as it is a lovely part of the year and I will enjoy my spring with the thoughts of long, lazy days in the garden. xx

  5. I am melancholy, too, for the leaving of Summer. She is such a good friend. I am always sad to bid her goodbye as she packs her bags and Autumn steps off the train to greet everyone.

Thank you for your lovely blog. It reminds me that there is still beauty in the world. ~Amy

  11. Living where we do, our summer flowers are actually better in spring - I am learning what tolerates Georgia's hot, dry summers though to keep color in the garden. The memories of the lovely flowers are well kept through your blog - you portray them so beautifully. I am a melancholy spirit too -touched deeply by things around me - ready to rejoice and ready to weep when my heart feels it! Autumn is special to me I think because it reflects the culmination of a well-lived life - still much to give - more relaxed, more settled preparing for the winter years of life.
Rejoice and Cherish each season! Hope your weekend is going well!
    Hugs and Blessings,
    Kathy

  12. I love the was you wrote this post, Cielo--beautiful especially where you said "it spreads and swirls ripening to an overall gold as it heals a world that has grown dusty and dry under the austerity of August." That really speaks to me and is so true. Thank you!
